Mexican Culture - hofstede insights
When we use the hofstede insights strategy we can have a tool for comparing both Mexican and Colombian culture. Power distance in Colombia has a score of 67, while in Mexico it is 81. This high score means that in both countries the inequalities amongst people are simply a fact of life and it is accepted in all layers of society. We think this is evident because in both countries people with money are very rich and at the same time poor people are very poor. Both Mexico and Colombia have a low individualism score (13 CO and 30 Mex). Both cultures belong to the most collectivistic cultures in the world and their members tend to be part of social groups based on profit. However, according to this score, Mexicans are considered less sociable compared to Colombians. Colombians will often go out of their way to help you if they feel there is enough attention given to developing a relationship, while in Mexican culture relationship is manifest in a close long-term commitment to the member ‘group’, be that a family, extended family, or extended relationships. On the other hand, both cultures are considered as a Masculine society with very similar scores (64 for Colombia and 69 for Mexico), this indicates that Mexicans and Colombians are competitive and status-oriented and people “live in order to work”. As a result of belonging to Masculine society, they often sacrifice leisure against work. Another very similar index in both cultures is uncertainty avoidance with scores of 80 for Colombia and 82 for Mexico, this is explained because in these cultures they tend to maintain rigid codes of belief and behaviour and are intolerant of unorthodox behaviour and ideas. For instance, the rules presented by religion are highly respected in these cultures. In addition, With a low score of 13, Colombian culture is classified as normative as well as Mexican culture with a score of 24. which may be due to people from these cultures exhibit great respect for traditions, a relatively small propensity to save for the future, and a focus on achieving quick results. Finally, with a very high score of 97, Mexican culture has a definite tendency toward Indulgence and in this case this dimension exceeds Colombia's score of 83. It tells us that Mexicans tend to exhibit a willingness to realise their impulses and desires with regard to enjoying life and having fun in greater proportion than Colombians, although these also please and spend money as they wish.
